It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas (while that is awesome) it’s time for rebirth!
Today we’re going to talk about 10 things to do in the new year to just basically make it a badass year. I don’t even feel like I need to say it because everyone has said it a million times before but 2020 was interesting… it was definitely an opportunity for growth and a learning expedition if you. 2020 was not what any of us had expected but we made it through so I know that this is the time of year where people start thinking about their goals what they want to achieve in the new year and they have this whole “can do” attitude. This is great but I know that a lot of times that fall off after some time and there is an episode where I talk about your new year’s goals and like how we typically fall off on them and I will link that in the show notes but I want to share 10 things that you can do and incorporate into your days to make 2021 amazing and then also just to get you on the right foot and to keep you focused on what you’re going to be doing now the first thing is to.
Get Clear On Your Goals
Get REALLY REALLY clear on your goals! If you have been listening to the podcast for a while then you know that I’m all about goal setting and I think part of what happens when people make these goals for the new year and they don’t happen. The reason is that they’re way too vague. Instead of saying, “I want to lose 25 pounds,” people say “I want to lose weight in 2021.” Or, “I want to have the best year of business ever!” What does that look like? Does that look like X amount of clients a month? How much revenue each quarter?
I will make an important note about goals, once again to go back to 2020, obviously what we thought was gonna happen didn’t happen so a lot of people who are the best goal planners they had a strategy or plan for 2020 and things started changing. I recommend that you have an overall goal for the year but when it comes down to getting into the nitty-gritty of it just plan by quarter. If you say, “Next year I want to make $150,000 in my business,” divide that by four and you’ll know much in quarter one you need to make.
To get really woo if you say, “I want to lose weight in 2021,” the universe could have you lose two ounces and technically you lost weight. That is why you want to get super super clear on the energetic level and on the mental level because that’s going to only help your progress so much more.
If you’ve coached with me then you know that I’m all about having the occasional dance party. #GreysAnatomy Having random moments of movement and staying active is so important. This doesn’t have to be a health thing where you’re running 5Ks. Just getting up and moving, going on walks, walking around the apartment depending on where you live if that’s what works for you, just moving more and getting more into your body. So often we sit at our desk all day and we’re just working and working. Then we’re in pain and we’re having trouble sleeping and it’s because our minds are exhausted but our bodies don’t get a lot of movement.
Find ways that you enjoy that actually light you up. Do you like to dance? Try Zumba. I love to go on long walks and listen to audiobooks or true crime podcasts. Just find ways to incorporate some movement into every day. You don’t have to block an hour out of your schedule. You can set an alarm and just walk around the coffee table for five minutes. Just get your body moving Sometimes when I’m stuck on something is stressing me out or I’m frustrated with the project I’ll just get up and like go on a walk or play a play at Lizzo’s song and just dance for a little bit and then I can come back a little bit more grounded and ready to take on whatever.
I don’t have to tell y’all how important sleep is. It’s restorative. Sleep gives your body a chance to rest. Find ways to sleep more. If you really are looking at your schedule, no matter how busy you are chances, are you are putting things over your sleep and your well-being. You might feel like you can’t unwind for the night until you watch an hour of TV. But that is a story you’ve created. I get it. I normally end my night with an episode of American Dad. Last night, I worked until 11 pm on a client launch day, once I took a shower I turned on the T.V. and about 5 minutes in I thought “why am I making myself stay up to watch an episode I’ve seen countless times?” I turned off the T.V and played a chapter of one of the books I’m reading on Audible.
This is such a great way to unwind. Audible lets you set sleep timers in the app to either have it stop playing after a certain period of time or the end of the chapter you’ll.
We are so used to hearing stuff like “You should wake up and 4 am and doing 2 hours of journaling and sun salutations,” and you really don’t have to do all that.
See what you can cut out of your day to just maybe get an extra 30 minutes and then build from there.
Tap Into Spirit
Now, this could mean different things for different people. When I say tap into spirit I mean tap into what you believe in. It may be yourself, your inner knowing, your inner wisdom. So often we do things because we feel like we should or because that’s what everyone else is doing. That’s why we have to check in and see what feels good for ourselves and what is the right thing for us. Time to look for signs and guidance. Sometimes you feel things and you have this initial reaction and you’re being reactive but instead of reacting to whatever the stimulus is or whatever the situation is, take a moment, take a breath and ask yourself, “What do I want to do here? What is the opportunity? What is the challenge? What are the solutions?”
Finding ways to constantly be in contact with that deeper version of you. Staying in connection with that part of you might look like prayer, meditation, visualization, journaling, or therapy.
I am a big fan of journaling, It allows me to get everything out. Sometimes when I have a lot to say and I don’t feel like writing, I use the recorder on my phone and just talk.
Find ways daily to be connected with yourself in the universe and that can just be like taking five minutes in the morning to just breathe into your inner being and what you want and how you feel about things and also just allowing yourself to process emotions. So often we bypass as a society and then we also bypass for ourselves. We think, “Oh, this is a gross feeling. I shouldn’t be feeling it let me distract myself.” I get that, but sometimes what you really need to do is just let yourself have those gross feelings and then examine what exactly is the cause. Take the time to really explore and sit with things and allow yourself to just connect to your inner knowing and your true self because when we’re all go go go go we don’t allow ourselves to do that a lot so try to make that a priority in 2021.
No, I don’t mean a therapist but, if that’s what you feel inclined to I support it. When I say get help, I mean to get help on the things you want to accomplish. Get help on the things that are hard for you, get help on the things that you need support with. This could be asking a friend for help, hiring a coach, taking a class, etc.
I find that I very much do subscribe to that, “I’m a strong black woman. I don’t need nobody.” But I’m also aware that sometimes I can’t do it all by myself and that is okay. It’s is okay to ask for help. It’s okay to have someone assist. It’s okay to learn from other people’s mistakes so you don’t have to make them.
Look at the areas that maybe you’re trying to take on everything by yourself and see where you can take some of that load off of your shoulders.
Plan For Down Time
Yesterday I sat down and I looked at the calendar and I picked random days that I was going to be completely offline in 2021. These weren’t holidays or special occasions (mostly) these are just random self-care days.
If the days aren’t blocked on my calendar things will get booked during times I plan to be away. I’ll absentmindedly accept a calendar invite or a client will book a session. So, pick those dates and block them on your calendar.
Honor these dates. These aren’t a time for you to work on the internal project that has been on the back burner, these are days for self-care. Spend time with family, binge Netflix, sleep in!
A note: These aren’t creative days. These are restorative days. Select days to block off for creativity or internal projects if that isn’t automatically in your schedule. Typically for me, these are Fridays.
Okay, I know you’ve heard it a million times, but it’s is so worth repeating. It’s all about getting in a good vibration. Even if you don’t believe in the law of attraction when you focus on good things you just feel better. Yes, some things are going to suck. Some things you don’t want to think about or talk about. Taking some time to be appreciative of things is game-changing. This isn’t something you have to put a lot of effort into. It can be as simple as taking a moment when you’re eating to think, “I’m so grateful for this Whataburger.”
Sometimes when I’m running water I just pause for some gratitude because I’m so grateful to have running water. This is a great example of the things we take for granted. A while back the water at my complex was down for a full day after and it sucked. There are tons of people who don’t have access to running water and I was about to lose it in less than 24 hours. Now I have a new appreciation for something that I once took for granted because it’s always been available.
You’re not thinking about what you’re lacking or what isn’t working. You’re thinking about all the things that you are grateful for and that energy is so huge and getting more of what you want.
One of the best choices I made this year was to start volunteering with the Crisis Text Line. Giving back can look like all kinds of things.
- You can volunteer in person or online for a cause you believe in.
- You can donate your clothes to donate your clothes to the poor.
- You can donate things you’re no longer using like an older laptop.
- Offer scholarships to your program.
- Find a cause and make a monthly donation. Here is the cause I donate to each month.
Set Up Systems
I’m a project manager by heart. I had to say it. Get systems in place. This doesn’t have to be daunting. You don’t have to systematize your entire business in one afternoon. Take baby steps. Find one area each month where you can streamline a recurring task and go from there. You can also hire someone to come in and do this for you.
A note: Once they set things up, it’s your responsibility to honor them and implement them.
