New show trailers

2017-2018 Network Television Trailers

Guess who’s back with television trailers and predictions. This girl! I love this! I haven’t actually seen any trailers for anything that isn’t a remake yet so I’m super excited. Let’s do this live and in color.

CW

Life Sentence

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in3OecHvWXQ

Thoughts: Well Lucy Hale found another job fast. I’m not a Pretty Little liars fan (or foe) but I do like Lucy Hale. Hale plays a millennial who had been living her life the past 8 years preparing for cancer to kill her but then finds out she is in remission. While it’s great news for her family it is a major mindf#ck because now she has to get a job and live life without people protecting her because of the “cancer card.”

Predictions: Besides the PPL fans who will be craving more of Hale I feel like this show has a built in following. I plan to give it a chance it reminds me of what might have happened on (gone too soon) Chasing Life continued. I could see it getting renewed and lasting 3 seasons. I know that is a super specific prediction but there it is.

Dynasty

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxacuu_vg8Y

Thoughts: So this is obviously a remake of a classic show. I didn’t watch the original one. I did, however, watch part of the remake of Dallas and it seems a lot like that. I love the cast! Nathalie Kelley is an amazing actress with beauty and grace reminiscent of classic Hollywood.  How can you not love Alan Dale and Grant Show? That being said. This doesn’t look like something I’d want to watch. The trailer is hyper-sexualized and seems overly dramatic, but I’ve been lead to believe the dramatic form is true to the original’s form.

Predictions: This could go either way. Like with any remake there will be people who are so excited to see the new twist and others who will boycott it without giving it a shot. I don’t see it getting renewed. I think the show may premiere with high ratings and slowly drop over time.

Black Lightning

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZpJeuXo2CY

Thoughts: I had no idea what Black Lightning was when I hit “play” on this video. But man do I know now! I need this show in my life. I first thought….Great another superhero show on the CW… But it’s Levon Hayesssss!!! If you watched the short-lived but amazing Hart of Dixie you know what I’m talking about. Cress Williams has been on my television screen since the 1990s! I first became a fan of his on Living Single when he played Scooter, the love of Khadijah James’ life.  Then fell in love with him as the loveable town mayor in the CW’S Hart of Dixie. Okay, that was a tangent but I am so excited to check this show out.

Basically, it’s about a city that is constantly dealing with violence from a gang called the 100. Black Lightning was the savior of the city until he promised his wife he’d go into retirement because of the danger. As the 100 gets worse he realizes it’s time to come out of retirement.

Predictions: Personal feelings for Williams aside, I think this show will do well. CW has pretty much dominated the superhero network.

Valor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dqzih8hI1U

Thoughts: This looks really good. I see some familiar faces. Two members of the army receive a hero’s welcome after a mission goes bad. There are secrets and lies, captured soldiers and hot and heavy love scenes.

Predictions: While it looks really good, the CW keeps ordering shows that look like they should be (or have been) movies. I probably won’t watch it. I predict it won’t see season 2.

ABC

The Mayor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtbzQi6c9mM

Thoughts: An aspiring rapper runs for the city mayor as a joke and wins! It looks like it could be funny, deal with social issues and have some warm moments.

Predictions: This show has already been causing some buzz. The media has dubbed it “Trump meets Blackish,” (A show about a person with no political experience wins an election and talks about racial issues in a humor way). I could see it doing well if it is on the Wednesday line up.

For The People

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGhtrRX_NSg

Thoughts: Based on the trailer I would describe this show as the first two seasons of Grey’s Anatomy meets the first season of How To Get Away With Murder. What does that mean? Baby lawyers getting their first meal at the adult table.

Prediction: I can’t pull the trigger on this. It has great minds behind it but I’m not exactly in love with any of the characters. Also, I thought that Notorious and Conviction would be big hits last year but both didn’t even have a full season. I think if given a good night it could get a renewal for a short season, but if I had to make a choice. I don’t see it doing well.

Splitting Up Together:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8szcyMpM54

Thoughts: A couple decides it’s time to divorce after 12 years of marriage but to keep living in the same house. I feel like it’s been done before but I want to watch this show and love it. Jenna Fisher and Oliver Hudson!  Both wonderful actors. It looks funny and very ABC. You know, a show about the new normal for American families… it should be called Conscious Uncoupling.

Prediction: I am going to vote success. People love Jenna Fisher and this is a concept a lot of people can relate to, not the living with your ex part but trying to tow the line between previous spouse and forever parents.

Alex, Inc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgLLBCPYx4k

Thoughts: I spent most of the timing watching this with a scrunched up face but did literally laugh out loud at the end. The premise? Man hates his job impulsive quits and tries to start something new.

Predictions: I am a Zach Braff fan and by a number of times his name is in in the trailer so is, Zach Braff. I want to like it but it looks bad. I don’t see it getting a renewed.

Other ABC Trailers:

The Good Doctor

The Gospel of Kevin

Ten Days in the Valley

Deception

FOX

The Resident

Thoughts: Can we please take a minute to talk about this cast? Logan Huntsberg, Emily Thorne, Raj? Okay maybe I’m just listing the character they played on different shows but I can’t help it. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Matt Czuchry (Gilmore Girls, The Good Wife), Emily VanCamp (Everwood, Revenge) and Manish Dayal ( 90210, Switched at Birth). Basically, another medical show, the twist these doctors are fighting against the status quo to make sure they are practicing good medicine and not just running a business.

Prediction: I want to like this and will give it a shot but this isn’t Fox’s wheelhouse. I don’t see it going well.

Ghosted

Thoughts: Two very different men get recruited to work for a top secret organization investigating paranormal activity or aliens… to be honest I’m not totally sure. It looks a little like Men in Black meets Ride Along. I do LOVE Adam Scott (Parks and Rec, Big Little Lies) and Craig Roberson (The Office, This Is The End).

Predictions: This show has great stars leading it but it doesn’t seem super interesting. Looks like it would also be better as a buddy movie. I’ll give it a shot but I’m betting cancellation.

LA to Vegas

Thoughts: Very Fox. It seems like it’s basically a group of airline workers who are forever stuck on the same flight from LA to Vegas. It looks funny but stupid funny.

Predictions: My first response is it will be canceled. However, I thought The Last Man on Earth was a stupid idea for a show but has had 3 seasons. I don’t watch it but still.

The Gifted

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTzW9rMcbzk

Thoughts: I want to see this! It looks so good. I love the cast! Amy Acker (Angel), Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Blair Redford (Switched at Birth). It looks action packed. I’m shocked Fox is hopping on the Marvel bandwagon but I support.

Predictions: I don’t know that it will be a hit but I do think it will get renewed.

Additional Fox Trailer:

The Orville

NBC

The Brave

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvKsk_N0Cko

Thoughts: A doctor is kidnapped overseas. All the hotshots back home assume it’s retaliation but it turns out it’s strategic because they need her skills. It looks like a great movie. Sorry I know that is my go to but I don’t understand how this show keeps going longterm. Maybe the trailer is just about the first episode and each week they have a new mission? It does look interesting.

Predictions: NBC shows are always so hard to read. I don’t see it being a hit but it might gain an audience. If I have to absolutely choose, it won’t be renewed.

Law & Order True Crime: The Menedez Murders

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWa1SN0MNwY

Thoughts: So there is a good chance you’ve heard about the Menendez brothers before. I learned about this tragic and horrific double murder a few years ago when I caught the 1994 tv movie Menedez: A Killing in Beverly Hills. Basically, two brothers in Beverly Hills murder their parents, go on a spending spree, get caught and blame the murders on the physical, sexual and psychological abuse suffered at the hands of their father. A few months ago the story got some steam when ABC published a special Truth and Lies: The Mendez Brothers- American Sons, American Murders and again when Lifetime announced the new film, Mendez: Blood Brothers (June 11th) starring Courtney Love. So I was shocked to see NBC and Dick Wolf taking on the brutal storyline. It seems like instead of focusing on the brothers and their point of view this will be focusing more on the attorney who handled the defense,  Leslie Abramson.

Predictions: It’s unlike NBC to cancel anything Dick Wolf does (Sorry Chicago Justice). Also if The People Vs. OJ taught us anything it’s that America loves true crime documentaries. If they follow the theme of shows like American Horror Story and pick a new case each season, I think it could be a hit.

CBS

Me, Myself and I

Thoughts: Trying to think of the best way to describe this show. I would say a comedic version of This Is Us. You basically see the story of Alex as a young boy, a 40 something and then a 60 something simultaneously. It seems heartwarming. Great cast John Larroquette, Sharon Lawrence, Jaleel White and Bobby Moynihan. In all 3 phases shown it seems like his life is a bit of a mess but he keeps trying.

Predictions: I can see this doing well if it’s on the right night. I think it would do good on the same night as Mom and Life in Pieces. I see a renewal.

Young Sheldon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR-jIhwIfIw

Thoughts: I will start by saying I have never seen a full episode of the Big Bang Theory. This show does look cute. I love the actor playing Sheldon (Ian Armitage, you may remember him from HBO’s Big Little Lies) and the character of his twin sister seems hilarious. The actress playing his mother, Zoe Perry had a major role in the most recent season of Scandal and for the most part I hated her voice. I don’t mean to talk badly about anyone and I thought it was a character trait but after seeing the trailer I’m not sure. She did an amazing job in Scandal, don’t get me wrong but it’s a bit of a turnoff.

Predictions: Don’t ask me why but I feel like it’s going to flop. I mean it will probably have some steam because of Big Bang fans but I don’t think it will be a hit.

9JKL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPYegZi4R8E

Thoughts: First, I love this cast. In fact, this is probably my favorite new cast. Second, wtf does the name mean? I hate when a good show is ruined by a bad name (Selfie, anyone?).  I feel like people who watch CBS tend to enjoy these shows with wacky family dynamics. It has a good cast so it might get an audience. Basically, this actor loses his wife and his tv show so then he moves back home to his parent’s extra apartment. Putting him right in between his parent’s apartment and his brother and sister-in-law.

Predictions: In hopes of figuring out wtf the name meant I ventured into the YouTube comments and they were not good. I would give this show a chance but I don’t see it lasting more than 2 seasons.

S.W.A.T

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xD8nf1EhtA

Thoughts: Maybe because this is the last video and I’m just over it but man oh man why do we keep making all the movies into shows? Come up with a new idea CBS! But…. Shamar Moore! Love him! The trailer does look really good but it’s not really the type of show I’d watch.

Predictions: I don’t think that people want this. I’m sorry but the constant remakes are getting old. Not to mention the first S.W.A.T remake wasn’t a huge hit (depending on who you ask). I don’t see it lasting.

Addition CBS Trailers:

Seal Team

Wisdom of The Crowd

Star Trek: Discover

I don’t feel like I am super excited about any of the new shows but there are a few I will be checking out for sure. What shows do you plan to watch? Tell me in the comments.
