5 Quotes by Amazing Women

Wednesday, March 8th was International Women’s Day. So I thought this week was a good time to talk about the history of women’s day and share  some pretty awesome quotes by women I admire.

International Women’s Day- Historical Facts

  • Women’s Day was created in 1911 and spearheaded by Clara Zetkina, a German theorist.
  • The United Nations started celebrating the holiday in 1975
  • In 1996 the day started to have annual themes.

5 Quotes from amazing women

As a woman, I know you’re young, but you gotta hear it now: the most valuable part about you is your brain. Get an education; don’t let anybody tell you that your body or the size that you wear or any of that BS matters, because it doesn’t. Your brain matters, so be the smart girl in the room. Because, to be funny, you have to be smart, because you have to get the joke.

-Sophia Bush

Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.

-Oprah Winfrey

Some people say, ‘Never let them see you cry.’ I say if you’re so mad you could cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.

Tina Fey

“Ignore what other people think. Most people aren’t even paying attention to you.”

-Amy Poehler

I realized that I don’t have to be perfect. All I have to do is show up and enjoy the messy, imperfect and beautiful journey of my life.

-Kerry Washington.

The Tina Fey quote gets me the most. I am an emotional cryer. I cry when I am happy, when I am sad, when I am angry. It’s just how I release emotions. I’ve had instances dealing with overly rude bosses where the frustration has made me cry, and it is shocking to see how people handle it. I’m not crying because I am weak and sad, I am crying because you’re causing my emotions to go crazy so maybe you should take a step back and check yourself!!

  2. CAROL CASSARA

Ignore what other people think is my fave. It’s the most important advice any young person could get.

  3. Dia

I think it’s great advice for any age because with any new adventure we are likely to do that.

  4. Dia

I am the same way. I get so angry (Rarely) that all I can do is cry cause if not I might strangle someone.

  5. Liz Mays

I didn’t celebrate the day other than to read about it on the internet a bit. I think Kerry’s quote might be my favorite.

  6. Angie Scheie

This could be the tagline for my blog, and pretty much why I call it “Chasing My Halo”. Life is messy and we all just do the best we can. Happy International Women’s Day! xoxo

  7. Bree Hogan

Great list of inspiring quotes! My favourite is the one by Tina Fey with Amy Poehler’s running a close second.

  8. Jessica

My tear ducts are the primary way my huge emotions leave my body. Tina Fey has it right – cry away and watch everyone scatter, lol!

  9. Kim

I love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler…they are hilarious, strong women who never make excuses and enjoy doing what they do. They came from humble beginnings and worked hard to get to where they are. Great role models and inspiration.

  10. kristen

i LOVE this! and you quoted some of my favorite woman! Sophia Bush has always been a great role model because she is fierce and doesn’t stand down.

  11. Jessica

The Amy Poehler quote is spot on for me. Sometimes I worry too much about what everyone else is thinking I’m too busy to realize – they probably don’t even care!

  12. Kelly @theinspiredparent

Great quotes! Not sure which is my favorite, though…toss up between Kerry Washington’s & Amy Poehler’s. 🙂

  13. Chrystie

I love that these are all quotes from modern relevant women that we all know and love! 🙂

  14. Paola

Tina Fey’s one is so funny and I love it. I am going to use it in my favour!

  15. Ashley

I absolutely love the Tina Fey one. My husband once asked me if I wanted my daughter to be a woman that cries in public places (he doesn’t handle crying very well…..his own issue). I replied “Yes, I very much do. I hope that she is strong enough to not be ashamed of what she is feeling.” I also completely agree with the Lena Dunham one. If we stepped back and realized how strong we have to be sometimes, I think most of us would completely crumble. It’s about putting on some big pants and handling the situation you are in at the time.

  16. Rachel

These quotes are the best. Love these ladies!

It’s silly but we really need to remember what we’re thinking most of the time…normally about us.

  25. Dia

  43. Dia

It’s a funny way to think of a true statement.

  44. Lana @ The Joy Blog

I love the quote by Sophia Bush. My mom raised me to think. We read a lot, and learned music, and talked about big things. She wasn’t ever into that much makeup or anything so I didn’t grow up thinking all that mattered was my looks. Sure, I fell victim to wanting to be beautiful like most teens and early twenty-something’s do, but I’ve always prided myself on my great sense of humor, and being able to excel in work and education.

My mama didn’t raise no fool. 🙂

  45. Dia

Sounds like your mom was amazing!
