Blogher 16 Recap Part 1

It was a little over a year ago I sat down to write about Blogher 15 and all the amazing things that happened that weekend. I remember it being hard because it seemed impossible to put into words  but I had to. I found myself with the same problem this year, this time last week I was in Los Angeles California for the first time for Blogher 16 and as awesome as 15, was 16 kicked last year’s ass. Being in the presence of so many powerful, inspiring and passionate woman has sent me on a high. I don’t know where to begin so I’ll start from the start. 🙂

I have no doubt that Blogher is getting bigger every year because I went to book my hotel room a month before and it was pretty much booked solid. If you read about my experience last year then you know I had an interesting travel story, between flying on standby and staying in 3 different hotels over the course of 4 days.

This year was about the same except I decided I’d buy a plane ticket and say my self the stress of last year.

Well, I started on the right track. I purchased my airplane tickets and conference pass months in advance.

I wanted to wait until it was closer to reserve my hotel…big mistake, I was only able to book it for one day but a few phone calls and hotwire searches later I managed to book myself 3 nights.. in 3 different hotels all within walking distance to each other… Was it a hassle? Yes, but at least I saved some money.

Day 1

I landed in Los Angeles exhausted, starving and excited. I checked into hotel #1, changed clothes and headed out. I knew I needed food so I stopped and got 2 hot dogs from Wetzel’s Pretzels then headed over to the convention hotel  for Gyn and Wine (yes, you read that correctly). A talk about the female body and sex while enjoying wine! I loved this event. So often the topic of a women’s sexuality or the female orgasm is treated so taboo but not here. We talked about vibrators, the g-spot and the importance of “me-time.” I really hope they bring this back because it was a great way to kick off the event.

Next I head to the expo to meet the different Blogher 16 sponsors, I wish I could name them all because not only was the conference amazing but so was the expo. As I stopped by the different booths (and bars) I randomly stuck up conversations with people and just tried to take it all in. I was lucky enough to meet several amazing women who kind of became my girl pack for the conference.

After the expo closed, we headed down the streets of L.A. for some real grub. Needless to say with Adele performing within walking distance and the slew of attendees at BlogHer almost every restaurant was packed. We ended up landing at this little Mexican restaurant called El Cholo, where the food was good and the drinks were strong! By the end of that meal and after examining our bags of loot it was past time for bed.

I headed over to my hotel with 2 other women who also happened to be staying there and was sound asleep within about 10 minutes.

Day 2

The next day I woke up bright and early to check out of hotel #1 and get to one of the conference’ pre-events hosted by Staples. Special guest panelist for this back to school event included Lori Loughlin and Gabrielle Reece! Not only did we get to listen to them talk about their views on family and getting ready for school, we got to take photos with them and left with $50 in staples gift cards each and a pretty neat swag bag! After my photo with Aunt Becky, I raced (With all my luggage in tow) to the main ballroom to listen to Sarah Michelle Gellar  . I really have to give it to Elisa Camahort Page because she really got to the nitty gritty with her. Including getting her to confirm that Cruel Intentions reboot should start filming in the next year, that if there was a Buffy reboot she didn’t see herself in it and that she is in fact “With her” in reference to the upcoming election.

Hearing Sarah speak was nice because unlike a lot of other celebrities who branch out into a new field she admitted she knew she had an advantage in starting her brand Foodstirs. She was as kind, inspiring and as well spoken as I hoped she’d be. Excuse me still fan girling out over here.

Session 1: Podcasting vs.Vlogging Smackdown:Which is right for you if you can only do one?

I was so excited about this because I have a past with YouTube, although I’ve done my best to delete my attempts at comedy from the online universe. I’ve been playing with the idea of starting my own podcast for a while so I wanted to hear the nitty gritty and make a decision for once and all. I can officially say that this helped make my mind up and I am in the process of starting my own podcast! You heard it here first!

Session 2: Grow your influence with a social media strategy and plan

As someone who is a blogger by night and a social media/search expert by day, I had to go to this session. It was incredibly informative. A huge issue with social media branding is trying to stay consistent and true to brand across all forms. It’s so easy to try to do what everyone else is doing but you really have to do what’s true to your brand so your image is consistent and not confusing to your followers.

Ian Ziering

So I’m standing in what was arguably the longest line at the whole convention and there he is Ian Ziering! Yes, Steve Sanders from 90210! I’m freaking out and I guess everyone was too pumped about  Kim K. to notice. I took a few stalkerazzi pics from afar, got my food and sat down. While waiting for the speakers to start I notice Ian (yes we are on a first name basis) just sitting a few tables over. So of course, I got up and asked for a quick picture, fangirled some more and told him how awesome he was.

Sheryl Crow

Sheryl Crow was one of the first people to speak during lunch. It really resonated with me hearing about how her cancer diagnosis changed her perception and way she was living her life. I can’t wait for the album she has coming out with some special guest stars!

Kim Kardashian-West

Perhaps the most talk about keynote (and one of the most talked about people in general) Kim Kardashian-West was interesting. I won’t lie I had mixed feelings about hearing her speak, not that I have any personal issues with her but I was curious what someone in her position could really say to get me fired up. Say what you want about how she became known but I will hand it to her that she is a really hard worker and I admire any woman who can spin a sex scandal into an empire. It would have been easy for her to just try to live off of her family’s money but instead, she made her own money.
Check out part 2 here.

  1. Cori

I’m glad you had a good time. I know you saved money regarding the hotel, but was it really worth it? To me, the hassle of repacking and moving three times would cause me more stress than the extra expense.

  2. candy

I do believe I am a tad bit jealous of you right now. Yes some hotel hassle but what a great opportunity.

  3. Sophia

I am jealous this looks like such an amazing event.

Sounds like an awesome conference! That is so cool that you got to listen and see so many celebrities. I love Sarah Michelle Geller, and “Aunt Becky” looks pretty amazing. Can’t wait to hear about the rest of your trip.

  12. Falon

Sounds like a really cool conference! And I have to say that El Cholo is my go to when I’m down in the LA Live/Staples Center area! Much less crowded and drinks that live up to the price ;o)

  24. Dia

You should go! I can’t wait to find out where it will be next year.

  25. Dia

It’s a blast and totally affordable if you buy your ticket early and plan ahead.

  31. Dia

    It was amazing.

  32. Dia

To be honest she didn’t give any real words of wisdom but she is a hard worker. You can probably view a video of the interview on the blogher website.

  33. Dia

Do it! You won’t be sorry.

  34. Dia

I know I was like you can margaritas in texas for $3 but then I tasted them and now I know why lol

  35. Dia

Wait until you read part 2 😉

  36. Dia

I don’t think she so much sold sex as this of glamor lifestyle There were a lot more important speakers and events there than just Kim, that’s why her section isn’t exactly super long.

  37. Dia

She was so nice and looks amazing.

  38. Shane Prather

Ah I have always wanted to attend BlogHer! Looks like such an enlightening experience!

  39. GiGi Eats

  42. Dia

    It was the best!

  43. Dia

Haha I know. Next time we totally have to meet.

  44. Dia

The great things about Blogher is that they announce it at least 6 months in advance and have early bird discounts so you can buy the ticket, wait a few months pay for transportation and if you want to stay at the conference hotel you can book it and pay when yu check in or find roommates.
