How to plan your creative goals

October 2017 Goals

As quickly as it came, it went away. That is my “nostalgic” old-timey movie way of saying September is over! This month was busy but also felt very stagnant. I mean I got a lot of work done but part of me just felt like I was waiting for something to happen or for a certain date to start things and as someone who gets bored easy I am not a fan of that feeling. I have started working on things I’m so excited about and am slowly dropping them out into the world.  So here is what happened in September.

Done!

How to Het Run Over by a Truck: A Memoir by Katie McKenna

This book was amazing. Based on a true story, Katie talks about the way her entire life changed after she was run over by a truck while on a bike ride. It made me laugh and cry. Katie’s situation may not be relatable to many but Katie herself certainly is. Going from a normal 20-something to a full-time hospital patient who can’t walk or even go to the bathroom by herself is mind-blowing. Katie is funny, honest and so strong. I really recommend this book.

Dead Run: The Murder of a Lawman and the Greatest American Manhunt of the Modern American West by Dan Schultz

This is also another true story (I guess I was on a kick this month). While the story was well written it was a little tedious to take in. The story didn’t really start until around the 3rd chapter. The writer was trying to set the stage but it seemed like it droned on and on. For the most part, it seemed like an unbiased account but after reading the entire book I have some idea on the side the writer leaned more towards.  Decent book would have been a better movie with all the action and descriptive visuals.

It Ended Badly: Thirteen of The Worst Breakups in History by Jennifer Wright

Based on true stories of love and loss. I wanted to like this book but most of the stories didn’t strike my fancy. Some sad and other just messy disorganized accounts of history. I wouldn’t recommend it.

  • Do at least one activity a week for myself that isn’t work-related.

Because I believe in full disclosure it seemed like I traded work for weddings. No, I’m not getting married but all my friends are this year it seems. So it’s been bridal showers, bachelorette parties, etc. Therapy has actually been my saving grace, although I only go twice a month now.

  • Do my gratitude/goal journal at least 5 days a week if not 7.

I still haven’t been totally in the mood for this but I’ve been doing it but there are days when I just don’t want to and I don’t. Not because I’m not grateful or have met all my goals but because it actually made me feel more stress and less accomplished and that is the opposite of the reason I started doing it.

  • Do daily affirmations.

I’ve officially made my daily affirmations apart of my night time gratitude/goals routine instead of doing it in the morning. However, this has been way more important to me. It has been motivational and centering.

  • Meditate every day.

I have embraced the 5-minute meditation. Some days I go longer but either way it’s important for me.

  • Post at 4 new episodes of Creatives Crushing Anxiety

I did three episodes in September. But I did record two amazing interviews that haven’t been published but are in the hopper and I CANNOT wait to share.

Health and Fitness

  • Make meals at home 80% of the time or only eat out 4 times of the week.

Yasss! I know people aren’t supposed to comment on other people’s weight but I’ll be honest it feels amazing when the people I love tell me I look great! Aside from trying to stay healthy, I save so much money eating at home and with all the traveling for the different wedding events, it’s been important to save money where I can.

  • Workout

I’ve been trying new things. I even got out and played some real sports this month. I’ll also admit that the first week of the year I had a HORRIBLE back spasm, like the worst one in over a year (I had a bad accident when I was 21 and because of the accident my back still flares up from time to time). So I was in mind-numbing pain for a few days and my back is still a little locked up but movement helps.

Overall September was an eye-opening month, to say the least. But I am still doing the damn thing as the kids say.
