My Thoughts: This is one of the truest, yet most complicated quotes I’ve probably had the pleasure of sharing. The quote doesn’t say that words won’t hurt you. Former First Lady Roosevelt probably wasn’t implying that every negative feeling you have is a result of your own permission. I believe what she meant was words may hurt you but you have to give them permission to hold you down or change you. I am a black woman with a big mouth and even bigger opinions and dreams who grew up in a predominately white, southern town…. I feel justified in saying I’ve heard my fair share of hurtful words. The thing is, even the most harmful words you can’t allow to control you. Don’t give anyone the authority to define who you are and how you see yourself.
